Discover Our
Shared History

Our ongoing educational initiatives uncover fresh perspectives on interpreting the Mansion for today’s audience, ensuring that those visiting from near and far have a powerful encounter with the past.

Students, pre-K to post-graduate, visit the museum each year. Victoria Mansion staff enthusiastically assist teachers to provide tours and programs that incorporate classroom-specific curricula. School programs for students at Victoria Mansion are planned with Maine’s standards in mind, but we also strive to meet the needs of individual schools to ensure that each visit is just what the teacher is looking for.

A Century of Change:
Victorian Portland

THROUGH OUR CENTURY OF CHANGE PROGRAM, Victoria Mansion has expanded its educational outreach to make it interdisciplinary and engaging for students, bringing our humanities curriculum to Maine classrooms at little or no cost to schools.

Collaborative Curriculum Resource Hub

Today’s cultural organizations are aware of the challenges middle and high school teachers face when trying to add outside resources to their curriculum, and particularly when attempting to go offsite. The Collaborative Curriculum Resource Hub is designed to assist teachers with this issue by providing content and connections with cultural organizations throughout Cumberland County. Online lessons shared on the site are interdisciplinary and can usually be tailored to the needs of a specific teacher. Sites are also frequently happy to work with teachers to develop programs, whether it be a classroom lesson or opportunities for students to do independent research.

Our ongoing research helps us augment our interpretation of Victoria Mansion to include the broader social historical context of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

“I choose to support Victoria Mansion because of its importance as a Maine treasure. This architectural gem encompasses a world of opulence, fine craftsmanship, and a rich history of the lives that were lived in connection to it. I’m proud to be a patron of an organization that works to ensure that future generations can marvel at its wonder and immerse themselves in the rich stories it tells. I’m grateful to have a small part in safeguarding this tangible piece of the past that fosters a sense of connection to our collective history by opening our eyes to the fact that it is much more than just an old house.”

Preservation Workshops

Led by experts in the field, Victoria Mansion’s Preservation Trades Workshops help train the next generation of professionals. For years, preservationists have lamented the shortage of workers skilled in the special methods and techniques required to work sensitively on historic buildings. While this problem can’t be fixed overnight, we firmly believe that knowledge sharing will be part of the solution. New opportunities for participation and sponsorship of the program are available annually. Email Executive Director Tim Brosnihan to learn more.

Victoria Mansion is a Proud Member of the Portland History Docent Program

Victoria Mansion is proud to be one of the founding partner sites of the Portland History Docent (PHD) program, established in 1995.
