Valentine’s Day! See the Parlor Highlights with the Roman goddess of love

To celebrate, we’re highlighting some of the ongoing TLC happening in the Parlor, which overflows with imagery relating to the Roman goddess of love, Venus, and her son Cupid (or their Greek counterparts, Aphrodite and Eros).
If you visited during the holiday season, you likely saw the beautiful new curtains hanging in the Parlor. These were generously created and donated by holiday designer Dan Kennedy (Harmon’s Floral Company) and his sister, in a color nearly identical to that of the original Parlor fabrics. They also donated sets of red and gold tie-backs for each of the room’s six large windows.
Since these curtains will luckily remain in the Parlor, our conservator Siobhan Lindsay has been cleaning and treating the original tie-back pins (photos 2 and 3) with solutions of vinegar and lemon oil. These pins left the room during its conservation in 2018-2021, and are being reinstalled for the first time since the project ended. Conservation Technician Vivian Cunningham has also been deep-cleaning the Parlor, getting it ready for the season.
When you visit this year, be sure to take an extra look at the window details in the Parlor!
We’re delighted to have window treatments in the room again, helping to bring it all together.
Our regular season runs from May 1 – October 31.
