SUMMARY:Unwilling Architects Initiative Art Unveiling
DESCRIPTION:Since 2021\, Victoria Mansion has been researching and sharing the stories of the individuals enslaved by the Morses in New Orleans\, and how their unpaid labor provided the funds to build this beautiful summer home. Thanks to a generous grant from Coffee by Design’s Rebel Blend Fund\, Victoria Mansion has been working with artist Carl Joe Williams to produce a piece of art to bring the stories of the Unwilling Architects Initiative to life. \nWe would like to thank Indigo Arts Alliance\, our Artist Selection Partners\, for their support and guidance throughout the process. We are excited to have this work on display\, giving us a tangible reminder of the role these individuals played in the Mansion’s history. \nPlease join us on Wednesday\, October 29th as we share this work for the first time and hear from the artist about his process. DESCRIPTION:The Victorian age witnessed a resurgence in Gothic fiction\, which was peppered with supernatural and inexplicable events. To experience a true Victorian evening join this storytelling event performed by British actor\, Andrew Harris\, as Charles Dickens\, reading three tales of mystery\, intrigue and suspense. \nDoors will open at 5:30pm and the performance will begin at 6pm. No late arrivals will be admitted. \nThis event will be held in the atmospheric\, Emmanuel Chapel in the Cathedral Church of St. Luke’s. Paid parking is available in the lot nearby (a mobile device is needed to pay) or for free on the street after 5pm. \nTickets are $40 for members\, $45 for nonmembers. \nOur sincere thanks go to RBC Wealth Management for their generous sponsorship of this performance and the Mission of Victoria Mansion.

Heavy hors d’oeuvres and drinks will be available. \nProceeds from this festive\, social evening support the Mansion’s mission to preserve this nineteenth-century treasure and share it with visitors from all over the world.

SUMMARY:How to Get Ahead in the Gilded Age: A Guide for Women
DESCRIPTION:Women’s roles in the late 19th century were often constrained by tradition and a male-centered society. Some women managed to break out of their molds and find ways to advance in American society. Three notable women of the time were Jane Armstrong Tucker\, Madeleine Pollard\, and Amalia Kussner. Authors Elizabeth DeWolfe and Kathleen Langone will share their research on these women who each found their path out of the traditional role assigned to them. \nThis program is co-sponsored by the USM History Department and is free admission. Throughout the entire month of May\, we invite you to usher in spring with A Legacy of Silk and Satin: Inspired by the Weddings of Victoria Mansion. \nThis exciting new exhibit will feature wedding vignettes throughout the Mansion interpreting weddings during the time the Mansion was an elegant residence\, with Mary Louise Libby’s 1899 wedding gown as the centerpiece. Additional accessories\, including some men’s pieces such as a top hat\, vest\, and coat\, will also be on display. \nWe thank Mansion supporter Ruth Herold Marcel for her generosity in loaning many of the dresses and sharing her spectacular collection with us. \nDon’t miss celebrating spring – and Mother’s Day – with Victoria Mansion! \nAn exclusive Member Preview Reception will be held on Thursday\, April 30. DESCRIPTION:Victoria Mansion is OPEN for Juneteenth. In observance of this holiday\, we are offering a community day with free admission and a special exhibit. Thank you to the Rines Thompson Fund of the Maine Community Foundation for their support of our Free Admission Days. \nWe invite visitors and members of the public to join us to celebrate the final reading of the Emancipation Proclamation\, held in Galveston\, TX on June 19\, 1865. We will honor and tell the stories for the twenty-seven individuals known to have been enslaved by Ruggles and Olive Morse in New Orleans\, whose lives and journeys before\, during\, and after enslavement we continue to uncover and share with visitors. \nSince 2021\, our Unwilling Architects Initiative has prompted extensive research that has begun to discover much about these enslaved persons\, whose uncompensated labor in Louisiana contributed to the fortune that built Victoria Mansion. Through this ongoing effort\, we endeavor to shine a light on these individuals’ lives and bring their stories into the full human history of this landmark property. \nTour admission is free on Juneteenth\, but reservations are encouraged due to museum capacity.
