SUMMARY:The Spiritualist’s Toolkit
DESCRIPTION:Following the mass death brought on by the Civil War\, U.S. citizens were desperate for evidence of a spirit world to glimpse or communicate with lost loved ones. With the advent of technologies like the phonograph and photography\, as well as the increasing availability of electricity throughout the country\, many alleged Spiritualists\, occultists\, and mediums began to give grieving (and simply curious) people hope. But how did they do it?  Join us for an evening tour\, using the Mansion as a backdrop\, for tales of the Victorian-era phenomenon of Spiritualism and the heavy influence of death and mourning on Victorian society. Following the tour with be a brief talk and demonstration on the special effects behind the seances that fooled and inspired the public for decades.  \nLed by Brittany Cook\, independent museum professional. \nThere will be two tours one held at 6pm and the other at 7:30pm. When purchasing tickets please select a specific time. \nThis event will be held at Victoria Mansion. \nTickets are $20 for members and $25 for general public.

SUMMARY:Reconstruction’s Restless Spirits: New Orleans Séances\, Afro-Creole Mediums\, and the Battle for Equality
DESCRIPTION:In the aftermath of the Civil War\, Americans turned to the spirit world to make sense of staggering mortal losses and uncertain futures. In New Orleans\, Afro-Creole mediums gathered around séance tables to commune with the dead. Voices of fallen soldiers\, abolitionists\, and Reconstruction martyrs spoke of liberty\, equality\, and justice—offering both comfort and a radical vision of a new society. Drawing on the séance registers of a group of Afro-Creole spiritualists\, this talk uncovers the world of nineteenth-century spiritualism\, where ghostly messages became tools in the struggle for racial justice and a reminder that the fight for freedom did not end with death. \nLecture by Dr. Ashley Towle\, Associate Professor of History and Associate Dean of the College of Arts\, Humanities\, and Social Sciences at the University of Southern Maine. Her research and teaching interests include nineteenth-century United States history\, the history of enslavement and emancipation\, and the history of gender and sexuality. She is the author of African Americans\, Death\, and the New Birth of Freedom: Dying Free during the Civil War and Reconstruction\, and co-editor of Grave History: Death\, Race\, and Gender in Southern Cemeteries. \nThis event will be held at Wishcamper 133 on the USM Portland campus. Paid parking is available at the USM garage nearby.  \nTickets: $20 for members and $25 for general public

SUMMARY:Juneteenth: Free Admission
DESCRIPTION:Victoria Mansion is OPEN for Juneteenth. In observance of this holiday\, we are offering a community day with free admission and a special program. Thank you to Kennebec Savings Bank for their support of our Free Admission Days. \nWe invite visitors and members of the public to join us on Victoria Mansion’s lawn at noon for a recitation by local actors of the Emancipation Proclamation\, in commemoration of its reading in Galveston\, TX on June 19\, 1865. We will also honor and hold space for the twenty-seven individuals known to have been enslaved by Ruggles and Olive Morse in New Orleans\, whose lives and journeys before\, during\, and after enslavement we continue to uncover and share with visitors. \nSince 2021\, our Unwilling Architects Initiative has prompted extensive research that has begun to discover much about these enslaved persons\, whose uncompensated labor in Louisiana contributed to the fortune that built Victoria Mansion. Through this ongoing effort\, we endeavor to shine a light on these individuals’ lives and bring their stories into the full human history of this landmark property. \nTour admission is free on Juneteenth\, but reservations are encouraged due to museum capacity. To reserve your free admission on June 19th\, please select the date on the calendar at the Plan Your Visit page\, select the time you wish to visit from the dropdown menu\, and then select the number of Juneteenth Admission tickets you wish to reserve. (For parties larger than 8 people\, please call 207-772-4841.) \nLearn more about the importance and observance of Juneteenth at Juneteenth.com and via the National Museum of African American History & Culture. \n

DESCRIPTION:  \n\nA free walking tour\, offered as part of Jane’s Walk Maine 2024!\nExplore Park Street\, part of the West End Historic District\, a well-preserved time capsule that offers a glimpse into 19th-century Portland. This one-hour stroll will highlight some of the people who helped create this fashionable residential enclave – which at the time was considered “the most beautiful neighborhood in Portland.” We’ll showcase the popular architectural styles of the 19th century and learn more about the people who built them and the movements to preserve them during times of urban renewal. For those who would like to continue the conversation\, we’ll wind up on Victoria Mansion’s back lawn for a discussion about four decades of intensive conservation and restoration work at this National Historic Landmark. \n\n\n\nACCESSIBILITY:\nThe approximately half-mile walk travels the length of Park Street from Congress to Danforth\, a small residential street that is primarily comprised of a historic brick sidewalk. There is free on-street parking and there are two handicapped-accessible parking spaces immediately adjacent to Victoria Mansion at the corner of Park and Danforth Streets. \n\n\n\nSTARTING LOCATION:\nLafayette Square Apartments\, 638 Congress Street (corner of Park and Congress Streets) \n\n638 Congress Street\, Corner of Congress & Park Streets\nPortland\, Maine 04101\n\n\n\nENDING LOCATION:\nThe walk will end at Victoria Mansion on the corner of Park and Danforth Streets. \n\nVictoria Mansion\, 109 Danforth Street\nPortland\, Maine 04101\n\n\nABOUT JANE’S WALK:\nJane’s Walk is a global festival of free\, volunteer-led walking conversations inspired by community activist Jane Jacobs.
